Bellissima Fabric Guide: Four Italian Materials, One Decision

Every Bellissima cover uses WavyTech™ technology for fit. The fabric you choose determines everything else: how the cover looks, how it feels, how it performs across seasons, and how long it stays looking the way it did on day one. There are four fabrics in the range. Each one was chosen by Paulato's textile team in Bergamo for a specific set of properties. This guide explains all four so you can choose the right one for your home.

The four fabrics

Microfibra Embossed, Microfibra Printed, Goffrato Cotone, Goffrato Velvet

Bellissima covers come in four fabrics across two material families. The Microfibra family is synthetic microfibre, engineered for performance and durability. The Goffrato family is a surface-textured fabric with two distinct material bases: organic cotton and polyester velvet. All four are made in the Paulato factory in Bergamo, all four carry WavyTech™ and WavyProof™ stretch systems, and all four are tested to the same 120-wash durability standard.

Fabric 01

Microfibra Embossed

The most popular Bellissima fabric. Maximum performance, widest colour range, all conditions.

Base material 100% microfibre
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified
Colour options 12 colours (1S–3S), 5 colours (4S)

Microfibra Embossed is built from ultrathin polyester microfibre, with individual fibres thinner than a single human hair. The embossed surface is a raised texture pressed into the weave that gives the fabric its distinctive appearance and tactile quality. The fibre density and tensile strength of this construction are significantly higher than standard polyester, which is why it holds colour through multiple washes and resists pilling under regular use.

The colour palette for Microfibra Embossed is the widest in the Bellissima range: 12 colours available for 1, 2, and 3 seater configurations, and 5 colours for 4 seater. This includes neutrals (Vanilla, Champagne, Pearl), warm tones (Terracotta, Cappuccino, Mocha, Dark Chocolate, Ocher), cool tones (Ash Blue, Graphite), and accent colours (Bordeaux, Dusty Rose). The colour names are inspired by the Italian palette used by Paulato's design team in Bergamo.

Fabric 02

Microfibra Printed

Distinctive Italian-designed surface patterns. For buyers who want the cover to be part of the room's design.

Base material 100% polyester
Surface Printed patterns and textures
Colour options 10 colours (1S–3S), 5 colours (4S)

Microfibra Printed uses the same 100% polyester base construction as Microfibra Embossed, with the same elastic stretch architecture and WavyTech™ system. The difference is the surface: Microfibra Printed carries distinctive printed patterns and colour treatments applied to the fabric, rather than an embossed texture. The patterns were designed in Bergamo and range from subtle organic textures to more defined geometric and repeat patterns.

The soft elastic construction stretches in all directions, so the printed pattern remains crisp and undistorted even when the cover is at full extension across a wide sofa back or around an armrest transition. This is the key technical requirement for a printed stretch fabric: the pattern must not distort visibly when the fabric is under tension. Paulato's testing protocol specifically evaluates pattern integrity under full extension.

Fabric 03

Goffrato Cotone

100% organic cotton. The highest safety profile in the range. For households where natural materials and certified safety matter.

Base material 100% organic cotton
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified
Colour options Cappuccino, Vanilla (1S, 2S, 3S only)

Goffrato Cotone is Bellissima's organic cotton offering. The word "goffrato" refers to the goffered, slightly crinkled surface texture pressed into the cotton weave, which gives this fabric its distinctive appearance. The base material is 100% organic cotton, meaning the cotton was grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms. This certification is applied at the cultivation stage, before any manufacturing processes.

The finished fabric then carries OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification, which verifies that no harmful substances were introduced during the manufacturing, dyeing, or finishing processes. This dual certification — organic source material plus clean finished product — makes Goffrato Cotone the fabric with the highest safety and environmental credentials in the Bellissima range.

As organic cotton, this fabric is naturally hypoallergenic and free of the synthetic chemical treatments that can cause or aggravate contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. It is the recommended choice for households with documented fabric allergies, infants or toddlers who spend time on the sofa, or anyone with a general preference for natural, certified materials.

Note: The limited colour range for Goffrato Cotone reflects the natural dye compatibility constraints of organic cotton processing, where colour options are intentionally restricted to maintain the organic certification and avoid the chemical-intensive dyeing processes required for a wider palette.

Fabric 04

Goffrato Velvet

Velvet elastic finish with characteristic brilliance. For buyers who want the cover to elevate the room.

Base material 100% polyester (velvet elastic)
Surface Elastic velvet coating
Colour options Vanilla (1S, 2S, 3S only)

Goffrato Velvet is a 100% polyester fabric with a characteristic velvet elastic surface coating. Velvet as a furnishing fabric has a long history in Italian interior design, valued for its light-catching brilliance and the way it makes surfaces appear richer and more saturated in colour. Paulato's adaptation of this aesthetic into a stretch slipcover fabric required significant engineering to maintain the velvet surface integrity under the tension of WavyTech™ extension.

The elastic coating that gives Goffrato Velvet its surface brilliance also has a practical benefit: it conceals existing imperfections in the upholstery surface underneath. Worn patches, faded areas, and uneven colouring in the original fabric become invisible once the Goffrato Velvet cover is fitted. This makes it particularly well suited for older sofas that the owner wants to present in the best possible light.

The touch sensation of Goffrato Velvet is distinctly pleasant: soft with a slight resistance, cooler to the initial touch than cotton but warming to body temperature quickly. The surface has a directional quality characteristic of velvet weaves and should be brushed in one direction to maintain the uniform appearance of the pile.

Note: Goffrato Velvet is currently available in Vanilla only. The single colour option reflects the surface coating complexity of the velvet elastic finish, which limits colour range compared to plain weave fabrics.

Which Fabric for Your Household: A Practical Chooser

The right fabric depends more on how your household uses the sofa than on aesthetic preference alone. Use this guide as a starting point.

I have dogs or cats
Microfibra Embossed. The microfibre weave resists pet hair better than cotton and does not trap fur the way open-weave fabrics do. Machine washable is essential for pet households, and the 12-colour range gives you options to match or contrast with your pet's fur colour so hair is less visible between washes.
I have young children
Goffrato Cotone if skin safety is the priority. The organic cotton and dual certification make it the safest choice for children who have prolonged, close contact with the fabric. Microfibra Embossed if washability and stain resistance are the priority — it cleans more effectively and dries faster.
My household has allergies or sensitive skin
Goffrato Cotone is the clear recommendation. Organic cotton with OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification means the fabric has been tested and confirmed free of the most common textile allergens: azo dye aromatic amines, formaldehyde, chromium, and nickel. Microfibra Embossed is also OEKO-TEX® certified and hypoallergenic if the cotton colour range is too limited.
It gets very hot where I live (Delhi, Rajasthan, central India)
Goffrato Cotone is the most breathable and coolest fabric in the range. Natural cotton allows more air circulation than synthetic fabrics. Microfibra Embossed is also breathable due to WavyProof™ technology and is a very good second choice if you want a wider colour range.
My sofa is old and worn looking
Goffrato Velvet if the room aesthetic suits it. The elastic velvet coating actively conceals surface imperfections and has a visual richness that reads as an upgrade rather than a cover. Microfibra Embossed in a deep colour (Bordeaux, Graphite) also transforms the appearance of a worn sofa effectively.
I want to change my room's look
Microfibra Printed for the most visual impact. The pattern options are the most distinctive in the range and the most likely to change the feel of a room. Microfibra Embossed in an accent colour (Bordeaux, Ash Blue, Terracotta) if you want a colour statement without pattern.
I want a neutral, unfussy cover that just works
Microfibra Embossed in Vanilla, Champagne, or Cappuccino. These are the three most neutral colours in the widest-performing fabric. They read as background, not statement. They work with every interior and show minimal dust between washes.
I have a corner or L-shaped sofa
Microfibra Embossed or Microfibra Printed only. Goffrato Cotone and Goffrato Velvet are not available in sectional configurations. For corner sofas: Microfibra Embossed (6 colours) or Microfibra Printed (4 colours). For L-shaped: Microfibra Embossed (6 colours) or Microfibra Printed (4 colours).

Frequently asked questions

Fabric Questions, Answered

Which fabric is the most durable for heavy daily use?

Microfibra Embossed. The ultrathin microfibre construction has superior density and tensile strength compared to standard polyester weaves. The embossed surface texture is pressed into the weave structure and does not degrade with use. For households with heavy daily use, children, or pets, Microfibra Embossed is the recommended choice.

Is the organic cotton in Goffrato Cotone certified?

Yes. Goffrato Cotone uses organic cotton that is certified at the cultivation stage, meaning no synthetic pesticides or herbicides were used in growing the fibre. The finished fabric then carries OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification, which independently verifies that no harmful substances are present in the final product. Both certifications are independently issued and not self-declared. For more on OEKO-TEX® certification, see the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 page.

Why is Goffrato Cotone only available in two colours?

The limited colour range for Goffrato Cotone reflects the constraints of organic cotton dyeing. Maintaining organic certification and OEKO-TEX® compliance through the dyeing process limits the colour palette significantly. The chemical processes required to achieve the full range of synthetic fabric colours are incompatible with the certification standards that make Goffrato Cotone the safest fabric in the range. Cappuccino and Vanilla were chosen because they are the two most universally compatible neutral tones.

Can I use Goffrato Velvet for a corner or L-shaped sofa?

Not currently. Goffrato Velvet and Goffrato Cotone are only available for 1, 2, and 3 seater sofa configurations. Corner sofa, L-shaped, and bed cover products are only available in Microfibra Embossed and Microfibra Printed.

Does the Microfibra Printed pattern distort when the cover is stretched?

No. Pattern integrity under full extension is specifically tested in Paulato's manufacturing process. The elastic polyester base is constructed so that the pattern remains visually consistent even when the fabric is at its maximum stretch range. Minor variations in pattern appearance may be visible at extreme extension points on unusually shaped sofas, but under normal fitting conditions the pattern reads consistently across the full cover surface.

Which fabric is coolest to sit on in summer?

Goffrato Cotone. Natural cotton is inherently more breathable and feels cooler on initial contact than synthetic fabrics. It also absorbs moisture rather than shedding it, which reduces the sweaty feeling of prolonged contact in high temperatures. Microfibra Embossed is the next best option due to WavyProof™ breathability engineering, which maintains active air circulation through the synthetic fabric.

For washing and care instructions specific to each fabric, see the Care Guide. For sizing information and how to measure your sofa, see the Size and Fit Guide. For information about OEKO-TEX® certification, see the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 page.
