How to Care for Your Bellissima Cover: The Complete Wash, Dry, and Maintenance Guide
Bellissima covers are engineered to be washable. Not occasionally washable, or hand-wash-only washable. Fully machine washable, up to 120 times, with no loss of shape, stretch, or colour. That performance does not happen automatically. It requires washing at the right temperature, drying in the right way, and avoiding the specific processes that degrade the WavyTech™ stretch architecture.
This guide covers everything you need to know to keep your cover looking and fitting correctly for years of regular use.

Washing in detail
How to Wash Your Bellissima Cover Correctly
The 30°C delicate cycle requirement is not arbitrary. It is the specific combination of temperature and mechanical action that the WavyTech™ elastic architecture was tested against over 120 wash cycles. Going above this temperature, or switching to a heavier cycle, subjects the elastic components of the weave to heat and agitation levels that accelerate fatigue. The cover may look fine after the first few high-temperature washes. The damage accumulates at the fibre level and shows up as gradual loosening of fit, reduced stretch range, and eventual permanent elongation.
01
Remove the cover before washing
Pull the cover off the sofa starting from the tucked sections. Remove the anti-slip cardboard inserts first and set them aside. They are reusable. Do not wash the cover with the cardboards still inserted as they will deform in water and become unusable.
02
Pre-treat any stains before loading
If there are specific stains, apply a small amount of mild liquid detergent directly to the stained area and gently work it in with your fingers. Do not scrub vigorously. Allow it to sit for five to ten minutes before loading into the machine. For oil-based stains, a small amount of dish soap applied before washing is effective.
03
Set the machine to 30°C on the delicate or gentle cycle
Select the delicate, gentle, or hand-wash cycle on your machine. Set the temperature to 30°C. Do not use a cotton, normal, or heavy cycle. The reduced agitation of the delicate cycle is what protects the stretch architecture. Use the standard spin speed for the delicate setting on your machine. Do not select an additional high-speed spin.
04
Use a mild, pH-neutral liquid detergent
Use a liquid detergent rather than powder. Powder detergents can leave residue in the weave structure that accumulates with repeated washing and affects the fabric's properties over time. Choose a detergent labelled mild, gentle, or suitable for delicates. Avoid detergents containing bleaching agents, optical brighteners, or biological enzymes, which can degrade synthetic fibres and affect colour.
05
Wash alone or with similar lightweight items only
For best results, wash the cover alone or only with other lightweight, smooth items. Heavy items like towels or jeans can abrade the surface of the cover during the wash cycle and contribute to pilling on embossed fabrics over time.
Why temperature matters
What Happens Above 30°C: The Science of Elastic Fatigue
The WavyTech™ stretch system relies on elastic polymer components woven into the fabric structure. These components are what give the fabric its biaxial extension and its shape memory. The behaviour of elastic polymers under heat follows a well-documented pattern: above a certain threshold temperature, the polymer chains begin to lose their ability to return to their original configuration after stretching. This is called elastic fatigue.
For the specific elastic components in WavyTech™ fabric, the safe upper limit is 30°C. At 40°C, the elasticity begins to degrade measurably. At 60°C, the degradation is rapid and largely irreversible. The cover will still function as a cover after a high-temperature wash. But its stretch range, shape retention after washing, and long-term fit quality will be permanently compromised from that point forward.
The 120-wash guarantee is conditional on washing at 30°C on the delicate cycle. Washing above this temperature, regardless of how many times, voids the expected durability performance. If you have accidentally washed the cover at a higher temperature once, it is not necessarily ruined. If it has happened repeatedly, you may begin to notice the cover fitting less precisely than it did originally. This is elastic fatigue, not a product defect.
Drying
How to Dry Your Bellissima Cover
All Bellissima covers must be air dried. This is the single most important drying instruction and it applies without exception across all fabrics in the range.
DO
Air dry away from direct heat sources
Hang or lay the cover flat in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, radiators, heating vents, or any direct heat source. Natural airflow is sufficient. In Indian conditions, a covered outdoor area or a ventilated indoor space dries covers effectively within a few hours in summer.
DO
Refit while still slightly damp
The optimal time to refit the cover onto the sofa is when it is still slightly damp, not fully dry. At this point the fabric is at its most flexible and the WavyTech™ stretch will seat itself most accurately against the sofa geometry. The cover will finish drying in place on the sofa, which further reinforces the fit.
NO
Do not tumble dry on any setting
Tumble drying subjects the fabric to sustained heat at 50 to 80°C, far above the 30°C safe limit for the elastic components. Even the "cool" setting on most tumble dryers operates well above the threshold for elastic fatigue. A single full tumble dry cycle can cause permanent dimensional change in the cover that cannot be reversed.
NO
Do not iron or steam
Ironing and steaming both apply localised heat above the safe threshold for the elastic components. Beyond the elastic damage, ironing WavyTech™ fabric flattens the surface structure of embossed fabrics and permanently alters the texture. Bellissima covers do not require ironing. Any minor creasing from washing disappears when the cover is refitted on the sofa.
NO
Do not dry in direct sunlight for extended periods
Brief indirect sunlight during drying is not a problem. Extended direct sunlight exposure causes UV degradation of dye molecules, leading to colour fading. This is particularly relevant in India where direct sun intensity can be extreme. Dry in shade or in a well-ventilated indoor space.
India-specific guidance
Seasonal Care Guidance for Indian Conditions
Summer (March to June)
Indian summers are the most demanding season for sofa covers. High temperatures mean more bare skin contact, more sweat transfer to the fabric, and more dust accumulation from open windows and AC condensation. During peak summer, washing frequency may increase to once every two to three weeks in households with heavy use. The 30°C machine wash guideline is well suited to Indian tap water temperatures in summer, which often approach this range naturally. Use cold tap water if your water is warm and ensure the machine thermostat setting is at 30°C regardless.
Monsoon (June to September)
Monsoon is the season of highest risk for textile furnishings in India. Ambient humidity levels of 80 to 90 percent in coastal cities and major urban centres mean that textiles dry slowly and are prone to developing musty odours if not dried thoroughly. After washing during monsoon, ensure full drying before refitting. A cover refitted while still damp in high-humidity conditions can develop odour and mould at the sofa contact points. A fan directed at the cover during drying significantly reduces drying time in humid conditions. If the cover develops a musty smell without visible mould, a second wash with a small amount of white vinegar added to the detergent compartment is effective.
Winter (November to February)
Winter washing is straightforward in most Indian regions. In colder northern cities where tap water can be genuinely cold, ensure the machine is set to heat to 30°C rather than washing in cold water, as cold washing is less effective at removing oils and organic residues from fabric. Drying indoors in good ventilation is effective and preferable to outdoor drying in cold, damp winter air in northern cities.
Festival season (Diwali, Eid, Christmas)
Many Indian households wash sofa covers before major festivals and guest visits. Washing two to three days before the occasion gives the cover sufficient time to air dry fully and be refitted properly. Washing the day before risks refitting a damp cover, which is manageable but not ideal in humid conditions.
Fabric-specific notes
Care Notes by Fabric Type
| Fabric |
Special care consideration |
Drying note |
| Microfibra Embossed |
The embossed surface texture can be affected by washing with rough items. Wash alone or with other smooth fabrics. The texture is set into the weave structure and does not require any special treatment to maintain. |
Air dry. The embossed texture fully recovers its appearance once dry. No ironing or steaming required or permitted. |
| Microfibra Printed |
Printed patterns are colourfast under OEKO-TEX® testing. Wash inside out if concerned about pattern fading over many wash cycles. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight during drying as this is the primary cause of printed pattern fading. |
Air dry in shade. Inside-out drying in indirect light preserves print clarity over many wash cycles. |
| Goffrato Cotone |
Organic cotton absorbs water more fully than synthetic fabrics and takes longer to dry. Plan for additional drying time, particularly during monsoon. Cotton also tends to crease more visibly when folded. Minor creasing disappears completely when the cover is refitted on the sofa. |
Air dry flat if possible to minimise creasing. Refitting while slightly damp reduces visible creasing on the sofa. |
| Goffrato Velvet |
The velvet elastic surface is sensitive to abrasive contact during washing. Wash alone, not with items that have zips, buttons, or rough surfaces. Velvet fabrics can temporarily flatten in the direction of washing agitation. This fully recovers on drying. |
Air dry away from direct airflow that could flatten the pile. Hang or lay flat. Do not brush while wet. |
The anti-slip inserts
Caring for the Anti-Slip Cardboard Inserts
Every Bellissima cover is packaged with anti-slip cardboard inserts. These are placed inside the tucked sections of the cover during fitting to prevent the cover from shifting during use. They are an important part of how the cover stays in position.
The inserts are made of firm cardboard and are reusable across many wash cycles if handled correctly. Remove them before washing and store them in a dry location. Do not wash them. Do not leave them in the cover during a wash cycle as they will soften, deform, and become unusable when wet. When the cover is dry and refitted, reinsert the cardboards into the tucked sections at the seat back and sides.
If the inserts become damaged or bent over time, firm pieces of cardboard cut to a similar size work as a replacement. The function is to hold the tucked fabric in place against the sofa frame. The material and exact dimensions are not critical, as long as the insert is firm enough to resist being pulled out during use.
Storage
Storing Your Cover When Not in Use
If you are not using the cover for an extended period, store it clean and fully dry. Storing a slightly damp cover, even in apparently dry conditions, creates conditions for mould and odour development within the folded fabric. Ensure it is completely dry before folding and storing.
Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and humidity. In Indian conditions, a sealed plastic bag or storage container is effective protection against humidity during the monsoon months, particularly for covers stored in areas with limited ventilation. Do not store in compressed form for extended periods as this can create permanent fold marks in certain fabric types.
Frequently asked questions
Care Questions, Answered
My cover shrank slightly after washing. What happened?
Shrinkage is caused by washing above 30°C or using a non-delicate cycle. At higher temperatures the elastic components of the WavyTech™ weave contract and lose some of their extension range, which reads as the cover being slightly smaller when refitted. If it happened once, try refitting while the cover is still slightly damp, which can help the stretch recover partially. If washing above 30°C has happened repeatedly, some permanent dimensional change may have occurred.
Can I wash the cover in cold water instead of 30°C?
Cold water washing is safe for the fabric and will not damage the elastic architecture. However, cold water is significantly less effective at removing sweat residues, skin oils, and organic staining from fabric. For hygiene purposes and effective cleaning, 30°C is the recommended minimum. In Indian summer conditions where tap water is already warm, "cold" and "30°C" may be approximately the same.
My cover has a musty smell after monsoon season. How do I remove it?
Wash the cover at 30°C on the delicate cycle and add half a cup of white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment. White vinegar is effective at neutralising odour-causing bacteria without affecting the fabric or elastic components. Do not add bleach. After washing, ensure the cover is fully dry before refitting. Fitting a damp cover in high humidity conditions is usually the cause of the musty odour in the first place.
Can I use fabric softener?
We recommend avoiding regular fabric softener with Bellissima covers. Fabric softeners work by coating fibre surfaces with a lubricating layer that reduces static and makes the fabric feel softer. Over repeated use, this coating accumulates and can reduce the breathability of the WavyProof™ system and affect the grip properties of the fabric. If you prefer to use a softener, use a very small quantity and only occasionally, not with every wash.
How do I remove a pet hair buildup before washing?
Before placing the cover in the machine, remove as much pet hair as possible with a lint roller, rubber glove, or damp rubber squeegee. Pet hair that enters the wash machine can accumulate in the drum and drain filter over time. Removing the majority before washing is better for both the cover and the machine. After washing, any remaining hair will have loosened and can be shaken out before drying.
The cover looks slightly creased after washing. Is this normal?
Yes, particularly for Goffrato Cotone, which is organic cotton and creases more visibly than synthetic fabrics when wet. The creasing disappears completely when the cover is refitted on the sofa. Do not iron or steam to remove it. Refitting while the cover is still slightly damp (rather than fully dry) reduces creasing further as the fabric conforms to the sofa shape during the final drying phase.
